The centre of the famous town can be reached on foot in about 10 minutes. The Balthasar Volcano itself is the ideal starting point for hikes, bike tours and short excursions in the immediate vicinity or day trips beyond the region.

ST. WOLFGANG

There is hardly a place that has been sung about as often as St. Wolfgang. But the place of pilgrimage owes its fame not only to the famous operetta.

Shrouded in legend, culturally significant and also historically on everyone’s lips for several thousand years, St. Wolfgang is a very special spot on earth – although the town on the Upper Austrian side of Lake Wolfgang is the smallest of the three communities bordering the turquoise-green Salzkammergut Lake.

Situated at the foot of the Schafberg and with the glittering lake in front of it, St. Wolfgang combines a multitude of possibilities for all holidaymakers.

Whether water sports, cycling tours, hiking, culture or culinary delights – there is something for everyone here in every season. If there is a desire for special activities, we can gladly arrange appropriate contacts or organize the booking.

St. Wolfgang
Wolfgangsee
Lake Wolfgang

The lake, originally named “Abersee”, stretches between some of the most beautiful mountains of the Salzkammergut.

Its surface is about 13 km2 and welcomes most guests on its west side coming from Mondsee or Salzburg a little above St. Gilgen with a grandiose appearance. Most of the lake is in the province of Salzburg, the small part belongs to St. Wolfgang and thus to Upper Austria.

If you want to know some special facts about the Wolfgangsee: The deepest point is 114 meters below its turquoise-green surface, its capacity is about 670 million cubic meters and it is one of the cleanest lakes in Austria with drinking water quality. ST. Gilgen

On the northern shore of the Wolfgangsee and at the foot of the Zwölferhorn lies a place that has retained its charm of times long past. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s family originated here, as his mother was a native of St. Gilgner.

However, the village has a lot more to offer in terms of history and traditions, which can be experienced in the local history museum, as well as wonderful and unique places, such as the idyllic bay near the district of Fürberg. For those who prefer it airy, the newly built Zwölferhorn cable car takes you up to the local mountain of the Wolfgangsee community.

In the garden of the European monastery Gut Aich, located on the way to Mondsee, about a hundred herbs are cultivated and refined according to centuries-old and traditional recipes – a visit is definitely worthwhile.

St. Gilgen
Strobl
STROBL

The tranquil village of Strobl lies on the southern shore of Lake Wolfgang. The special natural landscape with its moors, unspoilt beaches and widely scattered alpine pastures – especially on the Postalm, the largest alpine pasture area in Austria – provide holidaymakers with an incomparable experience.

Extensive hikes, bike tours, concerts on the lake promenade, operetta evenings or in winter various sports from skiing to cross-country skiing to tube riding in the Postalm Winter Park: not far from the holiday apartments at Balthasar Volcano, there is a distinct variety of leisure activities at any time of the year.

Salzburg

It is not by chance that the slogan “The Stage of the World” is used, as the name of the city of Mozart stands for art and culture like probably no other in the world and therefore needs no further explanation. Of course, Salzburg has much more to offer, so that the variety and the possibilities depending on the weather do not come up short.

These include the fountains at Hellbrunn, the Hohensalzburg Fortress, which can be reached either on foot or by fortress railway, the world-famous Getreidegasse, the Gaisberg excursion mountain, the Museum der Moderne, the Haus der Natur or Salzburg Zoo.

Only about an hour’s drive from the holiday accommodation at Balthasar Volcano, the festival city of Salzburg thus offers great views and a variety of options. For further sights and tips on events, please refer to the following page:

Hallstatt

Hallstatt is undisputedly considered the “archaeological heart” of the famous World Heritage region.

The historic centre of the village conveys a unique flair – probably everyone has seen various pictures of this place on various social media channels, which also gives its name to the so-called Hallstatt period. By the way, the oldest salt mine in the world is located here, at the upper end of the Hallstättersee.

In addition to the many cultural or tourist attractions, the scenic surroundings almost at the foot of the Dachstein are also worth a visit, because the Echerntal, for example, impresses with its very own beauty and invites you to hikes and exploration tours around this significant place.
