Active around the lake

Whether cycling, mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding, biking or water sports in summer or skiing and snowboarding in winter – here with us at Lake Wolfgang it is almost impossible not to be active.

The Wolfgangsee can be wonderfully explored from the water – whether by Stand Up Paddle Board, boat or ship, on the water skis or the kayak.

The mountain world also invites you to hike and linger. The cooling-off in the lake afterwards is priceless :)

For all those who prefer a more leisurely approach to their vacation, there are great opportunities around the lake. The Schafbergbahn, the Postalmstraße or the Zwölferhornbahn take you comfortably to the summits of happiness.

Tour 1

Hike from Balthasar Volcano to Lake Schwarzensee

The Schwarzensee has a total area of 48 hectares and measures 67 meters at its deepest point. The crystal clear lake is surrounded by lush forests and numerous alpine pastures. It invites you to swim and relax in front of a magnificent mountain scenery.

For the time being, you walk along a meadow path in the direction of Ahornplatz. Over a road and forest path follow the signs to Holzerbauern. From here, the well-marked trail leads you up to the mountain lake.

At the top there are two snack stations directly on the shore.
We recommend especially motivated hikers to walk around the lake (45 min).

Tour 2

From Balthasar Volcano to the Sheep Mountain

Depending on your condition and mood, you can reach the summit either on foot, completely with the rack railroad or first on foot to the Schafbergalpe and then further with the rack railroad. For driving times, see: Info at www.schafbergbahn.at

From us begins the hike in the direction of Jausenstation Aschinger. For now through a beautiful forest path with lake views. After 20 minutes you reach the snack station.

From there, the trail continues uphill on a mostly stony and mostly shaded path to the Schafbergalpe, which you reach after another 1 ½ to 2 hours. From the Schafbergalpe you walk comfortably for another three quarters of an hour.

Duration to Schafbergalpe (1363 m): 2 h
Duration to the summit: 2:45 h

Difficulty: medium

Tour 3

Hike from Balthasar Volcano to the Vormaueralm and further to the Vormauer Stone

A meadow or road path will take you from us directly to Maple Square (a crossroads where there is a large group of maple trees).

Here you choose the path branching off to the right with the sign “Sommerauweg – Vormauer”. The well-maintained trail leads at moderate steepness first over meadows, then through forest.

At the beginning the path is still flat, it becomes a bit steeper towards Schwarzensee. You reach the Maurus chapel, from here the Sommerau trail branches off to the left, which now leads steeply through the forest up to the Sommeraualm. Leaving the alpine hut on the left, you come to a flat saddle and now walk across a marshy area and a short stretch of forest to a spring. Soon after you come to the first hut of the Vormaueralm.

From the top alpine hut, keep left and follow a narrow trail that leads across alpine meadows to the summit. From the summit, go back down the trail to the crossroads in front of the top alpine hut. Branching off to the left now begins the
wide Vormauerweg, which leads in several hairpin bends back down to the Ahornplatz above St. Wolfgang. Even on the descent you still have many opportunities to admire the beautiful view of Lake Wolfgang and its mountains.

Length: 12.00 km
Duration: 4.5 hours – for a detour to Lake Mönich
(signposted) still 45 min. Include
