Active around the lake

Whether cycling, mountain biking, hiking, horse riding, cycling or water sports in summer or skiing and snowboarding in winter - here at Lake Wolfgangsee it is almost impossible not to be active.

Lake Wolfgangsee is wonderful to explore from the water - whether by stand-up paddle board, boat or ship, on water skis or a kayak.

The mountain world also invites you to hike and linger. Cooling off in the lake afterwards is priceless :)

For all those who prefer a more leisurely approach to their vacation, there are great options without having to do without the distant views. The Schafbergbahn, the Postalmstraße or the Zwölferhornbahn will take you to the summit in comfort.

The hike takes you uphill and downhill and you will always have a beautiful view of the lake, the village and the surrounding mountains.

Hike from Balthasar Volcano to Lake Schwarzensee

Lake Schwarzensee has a total area of 48 hectares and measures 67 meters at its deepest point. The crystal-clear lake is surrounded by lush forests and numerous alpine pastures. It invites you to swim and relax against a magnificent mountain backdrop.

From here, walk along a meadow path in the direction of Ahornplatz. Follow the signs to Holzerbauern via a road and forest path. From here, the well-signposted path leads you up to the mountain lake.

At the top there are two snack stops right on the shore.
We recommend particularly motivated hikers to walk around the lake (45 min).

Tour 2

From Balthasar Volcano to the Schafberg

Depending on your fitness level and mood, you can reach the summit either on foot, completely by cog railroad or first on foot to the Schafbergalpe and then continue by cog railroad. See travel times: Information at www.schafbergbahn.at

From here, the hike begins in the direction of the Aschinger snack station. Initially through a beautiful forest path with a view of the lake. After 20 minutes you reach the snack station.

From there, the route continues uphill along a mostly stony and mostly shaded path to the Schafbergalpe, which you reach after another 1 ½ to 2 hours. From the Schafbergalpe, the walk is a leisurely three quarters of an hour.

Duration to the Schafbergalpe (1363 m): 2 h
Duration to the summit: 2:45 h
Difference in altitude: 1177 m
Equipment: hiking boots
Difficulty: medium
Suitable for: Family / dogs (don't forget a leash
and muzzle when traveling by train!)

Tour 3

Hike from Balthasar Volcano to the Vormaueralm and on to the Vormauerstein

You can reach the Ahornplatz (a crossroads with a large group of maple trees) directly from us via a meadow or road.

Here, take the path branching off to the right with the sign "Sommerauweg - Vormauer". The well-maintained hiking trail is moderately steep and leads first across meadows and then through forest.

The path is still flat at first, but becomes somewhat steeper towards Schwarzensee. You reach the Maurus Chapel, from here the Sommerauweg branches off to the left, which now leads steeply through the forest up to the Sommeraualm. Leave the alpine hut on the left, come to a flat saddle and now walk over a marshy area and a short section of forest to a spring. Soon afterwards you come to the first hut of the Vormaueralm.

From the uppermost alpine hut, keep left and follow a narrow path that leads across alpine meadows to the summit. From the summit, follow the path back down to the crossroads in front of the uppermost mountain hut. Branching off to the left, the
wide Vormauerweg trail now begins, which leads back down to Ahornplatz above St. Wolfgang in several hairpin bends. On the descent, you still have many opportunities to admire the beautiful view of Lake Wolfgangsee and its mountains.
